Bon Jovi - New Jersey (1988)
It wasn’t until I went off to college that I met someone from New Jersey. Before that, the only thing I associated with the state was this record. If the whole state rocked this hard, it must be a magical land. It has been a continual staple as the years have passed, but the clearest association I have with it was back in the First Grade.
I idolized my oldest sister Cyndi, who was in the 8th grade at the time. She was a cheerleader for the St. Mary’s fighting Vikings and had a routine to one of the songs on this album. (For the life of me I can’t remember which one, but I kinda hope it was “Lay Your Hands on Me“) . I went to school early with her and watched the cheerleaders practice their Bon Jovi routine, and damn if that wasn’t a rockin’ song.
I can clearly remember sitting on her shoulders as she carried me around the backyard with us singing Bon Jovi. That is one of my favorite memories with her of all time.
This was also the first rock and roll cassette tape I ever bought. I played it endlessly on my “My First Sony.”
Please share your personal stories connected to this record. Music is so much more than what one can hear on a record.
