Converge - Jane Doe (2001)

Converge JD

The night began with me making a vegan lasagna for everyone in our college house in D.C.  It was a beautiful summer evening and others came over to enjoy it.  Someone brought a giant jug of Carlo Rossi wine , something I had never partaken in before.  Always having had a love affair with the mythologized concept of a pirate, I threw the jug over my shoulder and poured it into my mouth.  Surely pirates would not be above drinking Carlo.

The skies opened up and the heavens poured down, which led to the greatest game of wiffle ball I have ever played.  Soaked to the bone we came inside and everything was warm.  Either my roommate Nik or myself put on this record and immediately agreed to the unrelenting cathartic nature that is the last track, also named “Jane Doe.”  I had never found anyone before who could appreciate this amazing opus and together we rocked out for the entire 11 and a half glorious minutes.  And finished whatever was left of Mr. Rossi.

Nik and I had not always seen eye to eye, (such as when he didn’t have any matches and tried to light his pipe by lighting one of my wooden chopsticks on the gas stovetop) but he was the only one who understood the beauty of Jane Doe.  This record will always embody that night for me.  It also conjures memories of the only time I saw Converge, when a girl tried to pick me up by telling me I looked like Conor Oberst.  Huh.

Run on…run on….run on….

Please share your stories related to this record.  Music is so much more than what is on an album.
